Evaluation

For my photography project I have been assigned to firstly research into different photographers and there photography style. I looked into 3 different photographers and 3 different photography styles and wrote about them. 
Then we went on a photoshoot around the local town and took photos which fit into these four different categories: Advertisement/ Promotional, Architectural shots, Portraiture and Fine art. I then went on to analyse these photos and I looked into elements like: Content, Form, Mood and Technique. After I analysed my practice photos I then went on to start the main part of the assignment.
Before I could go out and take my pictures, I had to complete a Statement of Intent and a Risk Assessment. The Statement of Intent explained what the objective of my final images was going to be. I chose to base my photoshoot around the style of nature/ landscape. I chose to do Nature/ landscape because this style of photography appeals to me and I find the images a camera can capture of Nature/ Landscape fascinating. It was important for me to complete a Risk Assessment because I needed to asses and be aware of the dangers that I could come across during my photoshoot and how I could overcome these. 
Then I had to take 50 high standard photographs which are either in the landscape or nature category. I put all 50 pictures onto a contact sheet. This makes it easier for my teacher to look at all of the pictures I have taken to check that they match my Statement of Intent. After this I had to narrow down the amount of pictures I took to 10 by choosing the ones I prefer. Then I narrowed it down again to 5 and had to edit them on Photoshop. I did some colour corrections because some of my pictures were dark and didn’t look good with the content in the picture. I changed the colours of different objects in the photograph to make one particular object standout. In another photograph I made the grass greener and the sky bluer to make the picture seem bright, fresh and look slightly like a painting. Another edit I done made the sea look dark blue and the waves look very white. This added more depth to the picture and made the waves stand out and seem vigorous. When I finished editing the pictures I had to upload these to blogger. Along with all of the other work I had to complete.

Landscape photography usually captures the presence of nature, usually free of people and man made obstructions.

Joe Cornish and Charlie Waite are both examples of landscape photographers.

ADVERTISING PHOTOGRAPHY

Advertising photography is mainly used to sell a product.

To explain the product and show the viewers why they should buy it/ use the service.

Another name for this style of photography is commercial photography.

Jonathon Knowles is an example of an advertisement photographer.

Charlie Waite is and English landscape photographer. He is one of the world’s leading photographers. He worked in theatre and television and for the first 10 years of his professional life. Charlie Waite is known for using light and shade in his pictures and for using 6x6 sizes. He has done lectures around the UK, Europe and the US. He has published many books on photography and is a regular contributor to photography magazines. He also runs and takes part in a photographic tour company called Light and Land. Other photographers in the Landscape photography field are Joe Cornish and Colin Prior.

Jonathon Knowles is a London based advertising photographer who specialises in graphic still life, liquid and people photography. His unique style has earned him national and international advertising commissions working with advertising agencies worldwide. In the past 6 years he has constantly been in the ‘200 Best Advertising Photographers in The World’ books. He is now one of the top 10 all time winners in the graphics annuals. Jonathon Knowles has just had his three images included in their volume ‘100 Best In Photography’ published on 1^st may 2011.

Jason Christopher was born in southern California and is a Los Angeles California based fashion photographer. His photographs have been described as classic, romantic and clean. He picked up his first camera at the age of 14, which was a Canon AE-1. He began to take interest in Italian designers that he saw in fashion magazines. Then he began to assist celebrity photographer Jerry Avenaim. Jason gained his technical photography skills during that period. Jason Christophers photography has been compared to the French painter Degas and Leonardo Da Vinci for the way he uses clean, classic lines of the body, resembling fine art. His motto is: “Be prepared, or prepare to fail.”

Analysis of my 8 pictures

This is an architectural photograph. It hasn’t got a meaning, it’s just a good image of a pub. There is no main object in this photograph and the subject matter is not immediately identifiable. This photograph has social content in the subject matter because it is the side of a building which is a pub and this is where people socialise together. This picture is the same as how I took it and hasn’t been edited or changed. The main part of the image is on the right side. The colours are very neutral and similar apart from the green hanging decorations which stand out because they are green and there is contrast between the other colours. There are reoccurring lines in this photograph which follow to the same direction. There are also reoccurring shapes and forms. The two light shades, multiple green hanging circles, and the two windows that are open make the image seem more 3D. This is good because you can only see one side of the building and without these different shapes and forms, the image would seem very 2D.

The image could be noisy as well as quiet. It seems noisy because there are a lot of different focus points and places to look at, but it could also be classed at quiet because there isn’t much going on and the layout seems tidy and organised. The picture is neutral and doesn’t convey a certain mood or feeling.  There was no planning beforehand for example, no sketches were made. This is because I didn’t know what I was going to take picture of and just took photographs of scenes that I thought would look good in a photograph. Statment Of Intent

The photography style I have chosen is Landscape/ Nature photography. I have chosen this because the style appeals to me; I like looking at landscape/ Nature photography and I like taking pictures of nature and the landscape. I have also chosen this topic because I don’t think I will get bored, which Is good because I need to take a minimum of 50 photos.  The pictures I will take will be used in a museum/ gallery. I will take these pictures in Oxfordshire and London of the river Thames as there are nice landscapes there and I will also take some pictures in Greece as I will be going there during the course of my assessment. I don’t need people to model for me and I don’t require any props or objects.
